TEN COMMANDMENTS IN STONE (1)

Dubroom Online, Edition September 17 2009

Dubroom Online, Edition September 17 2009

"TEN COMMANDMENTS IN STONE (1)" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, September 17 2009 - Just recently, I got a very strange email. It was feedback on some articles featured on the Dubroom about the "Georgia Guide Stones".

For those of you who never heard of them: basically, this is a monument "Stonehenge Style" somewhere in the American state of Georgia containing ten "commandments" in several languages.

I prefer to call them the "Ten Commandments Of The Antichrist", as the first commandment is to keep the population under a certain number. A number which would indicate that roughly 80% of us will die.

The e-mail I received, and the subsequent short correspondence I had with the individual who claimed to be the head of the "Guidestones Preservation Foundation", basically confirmed and even emphasized my ideas towards these stones and just what they represent.

JOHN BROWN'S BODY - AMPLIFY (DUBROOM MP3 REVIEW)

WWW, September 2009 - Usually, Dancehall is created with the help of at least a drum computer. For this track, however, John Brown's Body takes it out of the studio and puts the musicians back. On top of this, there's some true US Style Rap and every now and then the beat drops to a more relaxed Roots Reggae rhythm.

LUCKY DUBE (DUBROOM ARTIST PAGE)

WWW, September 2009 - When Babylon murdered him, Lucky Dube left a legacy of pure militant and upright Rastafarian Freedom Sounds to set the captives free. He's experienced Apartheid first hand: being an African in Africa without having anything to say about anything in your own land!

JOHN BROWN'S BODY

Dubroom Online, Edition September 16 2009

Dubroom Online, Edition September 16 2009

"JOHN BROWN'S BODY" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, September 16 2009 - John Brown Body is a remarkable band. They used to be much more into Roots Reggae than they seem to be at this moment.

For years, the Dubroom has a review of an MP3 which features the band backing up Justin Hinds. Crucial Roots Reggae Music, straight forward and without apology.

But then, a few years ago, one key member of the band passed away while others left the band to do other things. This marked a change in the music which is now on the edge of not even be able to selected for a review on the Dubroom.

However, since the band is definitely (historically and presently) relevant in the American Reggae Scene, they are reviewed on the Dubroom and in the next 6 days I hope to present to you a couple of their new tunes and remixes so you can judge for yourself.

RAGGA

Dubroom Online, Edition September 15 2009

Dubroom Online, Edition September 15 2009

"RAGGA" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, September 15 2009 - It's never an easy thing to describe the different forms of Music that together form Reggae. Most of us will have our own names definitions of styles, like I prefer to call early 1980's Dancehall "Rub a Dub" instead of "Dancehall", even though Rub a Dub is indeed early Dancehall Music.

When the Drum Computer was introduced in Jamaican Dancehall Music, with tunes like the infamous Sleng-Teng riddim, the next style of Dancehall was born and it's names was "Ragga".

In the book "Rough Guide To Reggae", however, Ragga is described as "essentially reggae played entirely (or mostly) using digital instrumentation" (page 291, 3rd edition).

In a way, you could say that this statement was "essentially" true in the time Ragga came into existence, but in the meantime, there is too much Digital Reggae which has a totally different sound than this post-Rub a Dub Dancehall music, of which the track "Duppy Come Again" featured in this edition of Dubroom Online is a perfect example.

WWW, September 2009 - In this variation on the Sleng-Teng riddim, Beenie Man shows us the 1980's while in his lyrics he hints towards the Land of Creation, just to show just where he's coming from. More Consciousness would definitely not harm either Beenie Man and his audience!

AUGUSTUS PABLO (DUBROOM ARTIST PAGE)

SUGAR MINOTT THE VERSATILE

Dubroom Online, Edition September 14 2009

Dubroom Online, Edition September 14 2009

"SUGAR MINOTT THE VERSATILE" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, September 14 2009 - Not only is he said to be the founding father of Rub a Dub and with that of Dancehall Music, his extremely soulful voice has been recorded over too many Lover's Rock tunes to count.

In the same time, Sugar Minott's first self-produced albums were loaded with Roots Rockers music as the foundation of a lot of Conscious lyrics.

His self-founded Youth Promotion Sound System has provided the Reggae Community with a multitude of singers and deejay's, and then we don't even mention all his productional work for yet others.

Sugar Minott is indeed one very versatile individual in Reggae Music, and he's been so for decades now.

Oh yes, I didn't even mention Sugar's own Black Roots label.

But then, you can hear for yourself today. Check out Junior Roots' Natty Dread Time!

CONSCIOUSNESS VS SLACKNESS

Dubroom Online, Edition September 13 2009

Dubroom Online, Edition September 13 2009

"CONSCIOUSNESS VS SLACKNESS" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, September 13 2009 - This day and the next two, we feature a (reviewed) free and legal MP3 from Beenie Man's 2009 release "Way Out".

The topic of the tracks stands diametrically opposed to the topic of Luciano's "Hills and Valleys", which is also featured in today's edition of Dubroom Online.

Or maybe I should say, a contrast.

There is definitely a contrast between Conscious lyrics and Slackness, even though it's not true that we have to be politically or even churchically correct and never talk about the love between a man and a woman.

A contrast which doesn't just show in the lyrics, but equally in the music.

WEBMASTER WORDS

Dubroom Online, Edition September 12 2009

Dubroom Online, Edition September 12 2009

"WEBMASTER WORDS" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, September 12 2009 - If only because of the fact that the MP3 Portal is growing on a daily basis, you can say that the Dubroom is definitely moving into some kind of next phase in this website's history.

But that's not the only thing on which I'm currently working quite hard.

The recently started new section of Dubroom Artist Pages is another development that will, when the most important artists are added, provide an encyclopedia of words, sounds and sights which will hopefully be of service to many Reggae Lovers as well.

Considering the fact that the Dubroom is a hand-made website, things are not going as fast as I would like but I can't do more than I am doing.

Stay tuned for nuff niceness!

PROMOTING CONSCIOUSNESS IN THE DANCE

Dubroom Online, Edition September 11 2009

Dubroom Online, Edition September 11 2009

"PROMOTING CONSCIOUSNESS IN THE DANCE" (WEBMASTER'S COLUMN)

WWW, September 11 2009 - Dancehall isn't exactly that part of Reggae Music which is loaded with, let's say, conscious lyrics. If it isn't pornographic, we got violence as a popular topic and of course everything is not just preached, but practiced as well...

It's actually quite simple. The more slackness is promoted, the more this is also practiced. The more Consciousness is promoted, the more Consciousness will be practiced.

Of course, promoting Consciousness doesn't mean that we don't have to be "churchically correct" or "political correct" at all. It "just" means, that we have to be conscious in whatever it is we are doing.

Conscious when we are building our carreer as a female Dancehall vocalist, for example. Like Lady Shelly, whose free MP3 album should really be downloaded by every self-respecting Dancehall fan.

After her massive success in the 1990's with hits on several dance labels, Lady Shelly returned from Montreal to Jamaica where she re-launched her carreer as a much needed, more-than-conscious Dancehall Singer/DJ.

Her refusal to compromise with the often disgusting "rules" in the Music Industry has not stopped her from producing hits like "Kum Out", addressing domestic violence, and "Welcome To Canada", addressing the way Jamaicans are treated in Canada.
